RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF IRISH UNIFICATION

WHEREAS, The logic of history, international law, human rights and peace dictate the reunification of the island of Ireland and the reality of the movement – in the Good Friday Agreement and the development of the All-Ireland institution of governance – attest to this momentum; and

WHEREAS, The City of New Bedford through its elected Officials and Citizens have strongly endorsed passage of the Good Fnday Agreement among the previously warnng parties, 111 part because of the dedication of President William Jefferson Clinton, his Administration and Senator George Mitchell in seeing it to fruition; and

WHEREAS, The Contributions of the Irish-born, and Irish American in this City, State and Nation have contributed so greatly to our own National success as a result of a strong and proud Irish heritage:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the New Bedford City Council strongly supports Irish Unification and urges all State and Federal entities of these great United States to support all peaceful actions that support final reunification of the island of Ireland by all electoral and diplomatic means necessary; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the President and the Vice-President of the United States, the Secretary of State of the United States, to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to the Clerks of the Great and General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
